Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 25–30 minutes (rice cooker cycle)
Total time: Approx: 40 minutes

Appliance: Instant Pot rice cooker

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of white rice (e.g. Basmati or Jasmine)
  • 1 pre-cut nasi or bami vegetable mix
  • 1 packet of Surinamese-Javanese nasi spices (e.g. Maussi, Conimex, or similar)
  • 200 grams of raw shrimp (peeled)
  • 2 eggs
  • Bean sprouts (for garnish)
  • 1 red chili pepper (sliced into rings)
  • Pickled vegetables (like atjar tjampoer)
  • A handful of roasted peanuts

Preparation method

Add everything to the rice cooker

Place 2 cups of rice into the inner pot of your Instant Pot rice cooker. Add the nasi or bami vegetable mix, leaving out the bean sprouts and chili for garnish later.

Add one full packet of Surinamese-Javanese nasi spice mix and the raw shrimp. Pour in 3 cups of water and stir everything together gently.

Cook in the rice cooker

Close the lid and press the 'White Rice' or 'Cook' setting on your rice cooker. No need to monitor anything — your Instant Pot rice cooker will automatically cook and switch to keep warm when ready.

Fry your eggs and prep the garnish

While the rice is cooking, fry two eggs sunny-side-up in a separate pan. Slice the red chili into thin rings. Set aside your bean sprouts, pickled vegetables, and roasted peanuts.

Serve and enjoy

Once the rice cooker finishes, open the lid and fluff the nasi goreng with a spatula. Serve onto plates and top each portion with a fried egg.

Garnish with bean sprouts, red chili, a spoonful of atjar tjampoer, and a sprinkle of peanuts. Done!
